Description

The neuro-ophthalmology fellowship at the Duke Eye Center is a one-year, AUPO FCC compliant clinical fellowship for physicians who have successfully completed residency training in either ophthalmology or neurology at the time the fellowship commences. Educational activities for the fellow include outpatient care; inpatient consultation; participation in division case conferences, journal clubs, and didactic sessions; departmental research presentations and ground rounds; and attendance at one or more regional or national conferences such as the North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society (NANOS) annual meeting. Surgical experience in temporal artery biopsies, optic nerve sheath fenestrations, and strabismus surgery is available for ophthalmology-trained fellows. Ample opportunity is given for development of teaching skills, and participation in at least one original research project during the training year is mandatory. The clinical training is individualized based on the fellow’s particular background in ophthalmology or neurology and on his/her academic interests and career goals. The fellow will assume progressively more autonomy over the course of the year, in terms of managing his/her own patients in a neuro-ophthalmology fellow’s clinic and in guiding residents on the consult service. Upon completion of the academic year, fellows will have achieved the knowledge base and clinical competence to diagnose and manage a diverse array of neuro-ophthalmic conditions.

Positions are currently available for the 2023-24 academic year.
